Spiffy Solar vs. The Competition

How Spiffy retains distinguishes itself from competitors for solar critter guards:

  • Other clips require reaching around the screen. Even worse, they have to feed the connecting part through the right hole in the screen, from the back. Spiffy Solar goes in from the front, right where you want it, where it’s needed.
  • Competitors sell products just like Spiffy Solar, but with black and silver options. While they usually have the black option cost more, Spiffy Solar offers black at the same competitive price.
  • Other products are also stainless steel, which comes loose with the expansion and contraction of the solar panel frame and is very difficult to cut leading some to just bend the excess wire over, which doesn’t look professional.

Installing Your Bird and Squirrel Exclusion Solar Guard

Step One

First, assemble the two parts of the Spiffy Clips. Simply insert the straight portion of the hook into the hole in the washer. Note that the washer can only be inserted one way. Do not rock or wiggle the parts to get them together. This may deform the washer and prevent it from holding tight. It is best to just grip the wire firmly, close to the straight end, and push them together.

Instead of preassembling, feedback from users has suggested that installers prefer to assemble these pieces themselves, as they can carry more up onto the roof, in their tool belts, with hooks in one pocket and washers in the other. Assembled parts take way more space only allowing a few to be carried in their belts.

Step Two

Insert the wire only far enough to provide room to grip it with pliers, later.

Step Three

Next, bend to create the height of the screen needed. few degrees beyond 90, pointing inward where it will meet the roofing material. The most readily available straight edge for this bending is, of course, a module frame.

Step Four

This bend adds rigidity to the screen, customizes the vertical height, and allows it to rest in place before attachment. This preliminary height needs to be around one-half inch taller than the desired finished installation height.

Steps Five-Seven

While exerting downward and inward pressure on the screen, insert the Spiffy Clip hook into the opening closest to the bottom edge of the module frame. Turn the hook and pull, catching the hook on the lip on the underside of the module frame.

Step Eight

Grab the wire with pliers and hold firm while pushing the washer into position. Do not pull outward on the wire as this may deform the hook itself.

Step Nine

Trim the excess wire from the clip.

Step Ten

The clip does hold the screen against the module, but more importantly, it prevents the screen from moving upward, maintaining downward pressure against the roof. With proper installation, the friction of the screen against the roofing material makes the bottom of the screen immovable in either direction.

How Long Do Solar Panel Animal Abatement System Installations Take?

An experienced team of two can get most installations done in half a day. Pre-installation roof cleaning may add an hour or two. Critter guard installation specialty contractors sometimes separate the task of cleaning and installation with specialized teams doing one or the other.
